Brief Abstract of Genealogy and Ancestry of Jared Pratt

I, Orson Pratt, for the information of my posterity in future generations, and all others who may feel interested, write, with my own hand, a brief abstract of my Genealogy and Ancestry from the foregoing Record, making numerous and important additions of births, marriages, deaths, etc. <of the> descendants of my father’s family which are not found in the printed volume.

Ancestry of Orson Pratt, Sen.
About the time of the discovery of America by Columbus, two brothers, Simon and Thomas Pratt, resided in Hertfordshire, England. These I shall call the
First Generation
1. Simon Pratt of Sandon, Hertfordshire, England, married Joan, the family name is not known, by whom he had two sons, perhaps other children. His will is dated 1534. See p. 43 Printed <Record>.

Fourth Generation.

Rev. William Pratt, of the Third Generation, baptised at Baldock October 1562, was inducted into the office of Rector of the Parish of Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England, December 6th 1598 and married a lady whose Christian name was Elizabeth, but whose family name has not been found, by whom he had six children, and died in 1629, aged 67.

It is beleived on circumstantial and probable evidence, though not as satisfactory as could be desired, that the last two named sons, Nos. 14 and 15, emigrated to America; and that the John and William Pratt, found among the first settlers of Hartford, Connecticut, and who drew their city lots in 1639, were the two sons of the Rev. William Pratt of Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England.

William Pratt of Hartford, Conn., supposed to be the son of Rev. William Pratt, of Stevenage, England, married Elizabeth Clark, daughter of John Clark whoss residence in America was first at Saybrook, and afterwards at Milford, Conn. John Clark’s residence in England was Great Mundon in Hertfordshire. Selling

Christopher Pratt, of the Seventh generation, born November 4, 1712, married Sarah Pratt (No. 2274,) the daughter of David Pratt, June 14, 1739, by whom he had seven children part of whom are on Say-Brook, and part on Wallingford records. Christopher Pratt died at Wallingford.

Ninth Generation
1219.
Obadiah Pratt of the eighth generation, born September 14, 1742, married Jemima Tolls in the year 1768, she being but fourteen years old, and had by her eleven children. Jemima Tolls was born in New Haven, Conn., Aug. 11, 1754. He removed from Conn. to Canaan, Columbia County, New York, previous to the breaking out of the revolutionary war. He was a farmer, and also tanner and currier. Obadiah Pratt died at the above named place March 2, 1797, aged 55. Mrs. Jemima Pratt died in Washington, Dutchess County, New York, November 24, 1812, aged 58.

Tenth Generation
1239.
Jared Pratt of the ninth generation, son of Obadiah and Jemima Pratt, born November 25, 1769, at Canaan was twice married. 1. To Polly Carpenter [page break] in the <year> 1792. The date of her decease is not known. She left but one child. 2. To Charity Dickinson on July 7, 1799, by whom he had five children, all sons, Jared Pratt died November 5, 1839, aged 70. Mrs. Charity Pratt was born February 24, 1776, and died at St. Joseph’s, and a stone erected to her memory. Jared Pratt was buried in the cemetery, two or three miles east of Detroit, Michigan.
A few years previous to their death, they were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Charity Dickinson was sealed to Cornelius P. Lott January 22, 1st , 5m P.M. 1846. Received her Second anointing this same day. (See Sealing Records YC 381 .63q)

Polly Pratt of the tenth generation, daughter of Jared and Polly (Carpenter) Pratt, born February, 1793, was twice married. 1. To a Mr. Brown by whom she had one child. 2. To Samuel Bigelow of New Lebanon, Columbia County New York. She had no children by the second marriage. Mrs. Polly Bigelow died and has since been sealed to Joseph F. Smith.

Anson Pratt of the tenth generation son of Jared and Charity (Dickinson) Pratt, born January 9, 1801, has been thrice married. 1. To Sally Barber, daughter of John Barber and Barber, who resided at Hallet’s Cove (now Astoria) Long Island, New York, at which place the marriage was celebrated about the year 1825, by whom he had five children. 2. He married Elizabeth Clark <a member of the Church,> about the spring of 1842. 3. He married Ann Miller
Anson Pratt became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints, being baptized <by his brother, Orson> about the 25th of March, 1832. A few years afterward he removed to Michigan, a few miles east of Detroit; he again moved to Ypsilanta Michigan. While in Michigan he lost his wife. In the winter of 1846 and 1847 he was with the saints at their Winter Quarters, [page break] on the west side of the Missouri river, now called Florence, Nebraska. From this place he removed to St. Joseph, Missouri, at which place he died of the cholera May 26, 1849, and was buried in one of the cemetaries of that place, and a grave stone erected to his memory. He left no children by his second and third wives.

William D. Pratt, of the tenth generation, son of Jared and Charity (Dickinson) Pratt, born September 3, 1802, in the town of Wooster, Otsego County, New York, has been seven times married.
1. To Hannah Ward, January 1, 1837, in Kirtland, Geaciga County, (now Lake Co.) Ohio. Said Hannah Ward was born in Chester, Windsor Co., Vermont, February 26, 1808. He had by her one child. Mrs. Hannah Pratt died at Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, September 20, 1840.

Mr. William D. Pratt united with the Church of the Latter day Saints in Ohio about the year 1831 or 1832, was ordained to the ministry and travelled some as a missionary, preaching the gospel. He died at 1 P.M. September 15th 1870, at Salt Lake City, and was interred in his brother Orson’s lot in the cemetary of that city. He had no children by his third, fourth, and sixth wives.

Parley P. Pratt of the tenth generation, son of Jared and Charity (Dickinson) Pratt, born April 12, 1807, at Burlington, <New York> Otsego Co., New York State, has been married to twelve wives.
1. To widow Thankful (Halsey) Hand, September 9th 1827, by whom he had one child. She was a daughter of William and Thankful Halsey of Canaan, Columbia Co., New York. She was born <at Canaan, N. York> March 18th 1797, and died at Kirtland, Geanga Co. Ohio. March 25th 1837, about three hours after the birth of her child, being a faithful member of the Church of the Latter-day Saints.
2. To widow Mary Ann (Frost) Stearns May 14, 1837 in Kirtland, Geanga Co., Ohio. She was the daughter of Aaron and Susan Frost, and was born January 14, 1809, in Bethel, Maine. By her he <had> four children. By her own request, she [page break] was divorced in 1853. She is a member of the Church, and now <(1871)> resides at Pleasant Grove, Utah Co. Utah Territory.
3. To Elizabeth Brotherton July 24, 1843 She was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Brotherton, and was born March 27, 1816, in Manchester, England. She is a member of the Church, and now (1871) resides in Salt Lake City. She had no children.
4. To Mary Wood, September 9, 1844. She was the daughter of Samuel and Margaret Wood, and was born June 18, 1818, in Glasgow, Scotland. She is a member of the Church and now (1871) resides in Salt Lake City. By her he had four children.
5. To Hannahette Snively, November 2, 1844. She was the daughter of Henry and Mary Snively, and [page break] born October 22, 1812. She is a member of the Church, and now (1871) resides at Salt Lake City. By her he had three children.
6. To Belinda Marden November 20, 1844. She was the daughter of John and Rachel Marden, and born December 24, 1820, at Chichester, Merimack Co., New Hampshire. She is a member of the Church, and now (1871) resides in Salt Lake City. By her <he> had five children.
7. To Sarah Huston October 15th, 1845. She was the daughter of James and Mary Huston, and was born August 3, 1823, in Starke Co., Ohio. She is a member of the Church, and now (1871) resides in Utah. By her he had four children.
8. To Phebe Soper, February 8, 1846. She was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah Soper, and was born July 8, 1823 at Hemstead Harbor, Queens Co, Long Island, New York. She is [page break] a member of the Church and now (1871) resides in Utah. By her he had three children.
9. To Martha Monks, April 28, 1847, at Winter Quarters, (now Florence, Nebraska) She was the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Monks, and was born April 28, 1825 in Raynor, Cheshire, England. She left her husband July 1, 1849, and eloped with unprincipled men to the gold mines. By her he had one child.
10. To <Ann> Agatha Walker, April 28, 1847-at Winter Quarters. She was the daughter of William and Mary Walker, and was born June 11, 1829, at Leed, Staffordshire, England. She is a member of the Church, and now (1871) resides in Salt Lake City. By her he had five children.
11. To Keziah Downes, December 27, 1853, at Salt Lake City. She was the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Downes, and was born May 10, 1812, at Raynow, Cheshire, England. She is a member of the Church, and now (1871) resides in Salt Lake City. By her he had no children.
12. To Eleanor J. McComb November 14, 1855, in Salt Lake City. She was the daughter of James S. and Ann McComb, and was born December 29, 1817, at Wheeling, Virginia. She is a member of the Church, and now (1871) resides in Salt Lake City. By her he had no children.
Parley Parker Pratt, Sen. was one of the Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He died a martyr May 13th <14>, 1857 by the hand of H. H. McLean, about twelve [page break] miles from Van Buren, Arkansas as on the road leading northward, being at the time on a mission in the United States. – His family, at the time, residing in Salt Lake City, Utah. His twelve wives were married to him for time and all eternity according to the revelation and commandment of God, as given to the Church of the Saints.

Orson Pratt of the tenth generation son of Jared and Charity Dickinson Pratt, born Sept. 19th, 1811, at Hartford, Washington Co. New York, now (1871) living in Salt Lake City, — has been married [unreadable] to ten wives.
To Sara Marinda Bates July 4, 1836 Jim Henderson Jefferson Co. New York. She was the daughter of Cyrus and Lydia Bates, and was born Feb. 5, 1817. Cyrus Bates, her father, was the son of Oliver and Rebecca Bates and was born Feb. 17, 1792, and died in Henderson, Oct. 3, 1839. Her mother Lydia (Harrington) Bates, was born Dec. 7th 1796. She <Lydia> was the daughter of Daniel and Sally (Carhunter) Harrington. Lydia died a few minutes past 12 A.M. Dec. 28th 1873, at St. [unreadable]

Bates was baptized, and became a member of the Church of the saints at Sa kets Harbor, Jefferson Co., Newyork <June 18,> 1835 She now (1871) resides in Salt Lake City, having received all the sacred ordinances of the endowment. By her he has had twelve children. Died [unreadable] City, Dec. 25, 1888. Burried Dec 27, 1888.
2. To Charlotte Bishop, in the autumn of 1844 in Nauvoo, Illinois. Prisident Brigham Young officiating. She was the daughter of John and Lovey Bishop and was born in March <about the year> 1824 at Crown Point, Essex Co., New York State. In the autumn of 1825 [incorrect year] during the absence of her husband to New York City. She married a young man by the name of Tyler, and soon after removed to St. Joseph in Missouri. At the time of her marriage to Mr. Pratt she was a member of the Church of the Saints, but never received the ordinances of the [page break]

endowment. Mr Pratt had no children by her.
3. To Adelia Ann Bishop (being a younger sister of Charlott Bishop) Dec. 13 1844, in Nauvoo. Heber C. Kimball officiating. She was the daughter <of> John and Lovey Bishop and was born at Crown Point, Essex Co., New York, Nov. 5, 1826. She embraced the gospel when young, and received her first and second anointing in the Nauvoo Temple, and emigrated with her husband and his family to the Salt Lake Valley in 1851. By her Mr. Pratt had six children.
4. To Mary Ann Merrill on Thursday March 27th 1845, in Nauvoo, Heber C. Kimball officiating. She was the daughter of Valentine and Lydia Merrill, and was born in the town of Southhold on Long Island state of New York, June 2, 1819. She [page break] emigrated with the Saints to Nauvoo, and received her first and second annointings in the Nauvoo Temple. She emigrated with the family to Salt Lake Valley in 1851. By her Mr. Pratt had five children.
5. To Louisa Chandler in the winter of 1945 1845 in Nauvoo. She also received her endowments and annointings in the Nauvoo Temple. She emigrated with the family from Nauvoo in the month of Feb. 1846 and died about 50 miles west of Pisgah in Iowa on the newly made <Pisgah in margin> road leading to Council Bluffs, at 10 ½ o clock in the evening of June 12th 1846. She was buried on the east bank of a small stream, which, I believe, was called the Platte. The following letters were cut with a knife in a tree, standing

6. To Marian Ross, Feb. 19, 1852, the ceremony being pronounced by President Brigham Young, at Mr. Pratt’s residence in the 7th Ward, Salt Lake city. She was the daughter of Robert and Margaret Ross, and was born in Glasgow, Scotland August 1830. She embraced the gospel in Scotland and emigrated from Liverpool, Eng. with Mr. Pratt and part of his family in the fore part of the year 1851. Arriving at Council Bluffs the company was joined by the balance of Mr. Pratt’s family, from whence they proceeded over the plains to Salt Lake city arriving in Oct 1851.

The sealing ceremony of marriage was repeated over the altar in the endowment house Sept. 4, 1855, Heber C. Kimball officiating, she having received her endowments. She received her second annointing in the fore part of the year 1868. She received rebaptism March 5th 1857. By her Mr. Pratt has born to him five <six> children.
7. To Sarah Louisa Lewis at 11 hours, 40 minutes P.M. June 21, 1853, at Birmingham, England, 56 Hurst Street; Elder John Van Caert officiating. She was the daughter of Thomas and Louisa Lewis, and was born in Old Radnor, near Brinsop Court, Herefordshire, England, July 7, 1831. She went to [page break] Salt Lake City, arriving in the fall of 1854, bearing a son on the plains. In 1855 she was rebaptised, but did not live to receive the ordinances of the endowment. She died in Salt Lake City about 10 o’clock PM. Sept. 27, 1855; disease Mountain fever. Buried on Mr. Pratt’s lot in the city cemetery. She had but one child.
8. To Juliaet Phelps on Friday 8 o’clock, P.M. Dec. 14, 1855, at Fillmore, Millard Co., Utah Territory, President Brigham Young officiating. She was resealed over the alter, in the house of the Lord in Salt Lake City, April 10, 1856, President Brigham Young officiating on which day she received her endowments. She received her second anointing in the fore part of the year 1868. She was the daughter of [page break] [unreadable] in York Station Co., Indiana on Friday at 8 ½ o’clock P.M., April 19th, 1839. By her Mr. Pratt has now (1871) four children.
9. To Eliza Crooks July 24, 1857 at 42 Islington, Liverpool England, Elder John A. Ray officiating. She sailed with her husband and some returning Missionaries in the fall <of that year> to New York; thence by the way of the Istmus to California; thence via San Barnadino and the deserts to Utah. She was re-sealed over the altar in the house of the Lord, Salt Lake City in 1858, receiving her endowments, President Brigham Young officiating. She received her second anointing in the fore part of the year 1868 at the same time as Marion and Juliaet. By her Mr. Pratt had five children. Eliza Crooks Pratt died at 12 o’clock, noon, on Saturday January 9, 1869, in Tooele City, Tooele Co., Utah Territory; disease fever; buried on the 10th in the Tooele burying grounds, aged about 36 <40> years. She was the daughter of Samuel and Jane Crooks, and was born in Glaslook Co. Monaghan, Ireland, July 1829. By her Mr. Pratt had five children.

According to the revelation and commandment of God, the living may receive holy ordinances for the dead; namely, baptism, confirmation, sealings or marriage, etc. In accordance with this Divine institution, these <the first two> ordinances were administered to living persons, who acted as proxy for and in behalf of the following <51> females who are dead, after which, I Orson Pratt, Sen., acted being acted, for and in behalf of my father, Jared Pratt, who is dead, and my daughter Vianna (Pratt) <Eldredge,> acted for and in behalf of said females, and they were sealed to my father as his wives for all eternity. Joseph F. Smith officiated at the alter, and Abinadi Pratt and J. Blackemore were witnesses. These sealings were administered on on December 6th 1876, in the Lord’s house in Salt Lake City. Walsh at her mother’s residence, in the 14th Ward, Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, at 8 1/2 o’clock, Wednesday evening, Feb. 18th, 1874. Mr. Belding was b. 3 January 1842.
Herma Ethna (Pratt) Belding died at her mother’s residence, about 15m past 10 o’clock, Wednesday evening December 26th 1877, was buried in the cemetary on her father’s lot, on Monday Dec. 31st in Salt Lake City cemetary.
