News from Mission

Fort Madison—Elder Alma Pratt, writes, on the 10th inst., from Fort Madison, Leo county, Iowa, that he and Elder Richard Maxfield reached that place on the 28 of January, since which date they had been traveling from house to house. They had held no public meetings; the people are kind to them, but do not want to hear any preaching. Elders Pratt and Maxfield would be glad to hear from their friends and to receive copies of the Deseret News. Letters or papers directed to the above address will reach them.

The following is an extract from Brother Pratt’s letter:

“Last Saturday we crossed the Mississippi river, and for the first time walked the streets of, and beheld the once beautiful and blessed city of Nauvoo. I cannot describe the feelings that filled my heart on that day. I never can forget that my mother carried me in her arms when she and thousands of others were driven from their beautiful homes. Oh, how I wish that I could speak to my young friends at home and make them realize the importance of the work that rests upon each and all of them.”

Alma Pratt’s residence in Farmer’s Ward was searched by deputies last night, it was claimed for parties who were supposed to be hiding, but no one was found.
