Sunday, Oct. 16. The day was stormy in G.S.L. City. Two meetings were held in the Tabernacle. Elder Geo. B. Wallace preached in the forenoon and Prests. Daniel H. Wells and Heber C. Kimball spoke in the afternoon.

Between meetings the presidency met and chose a new High Council for the Salt Lake Stake, who were ordained and set apart for their offices in the evening as follows:

The New High Council

It will be recollected at the late Semi-annual conference, the High Council for this stake of Zion was disbanded. Some of the members had removed to and were living in the country; many of them had served a longtime and not a few had become old and superannuated; therefore, it was thought expedient to drop the whole quorum and at some other time organize an entire new council composed of vigorous active young men who could efficiently discharge the duties of High Counselors of the Church more in accordance with the principles of truth and life than some very old men can under existing circumstances in this age and dispensation.

The old adage so often repeated, “Old men for council and young men for war” seems not applicable just now and “Young men for council and young men for war” will be in vogue for some time to come, but there are a few things which are a sine quanau to the incumbency of responsible offices in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which all, and especially the young, will do well to remember.

On Sunday, evening last, the selection having been previously made, William Eddington, James A. Little, Claudius V. Spencer, Samuel W. Richards, George Nebeker, John T. Caine, Joseph W. Young, Gilbert Clements, Edward Partridge, Franklin B. Woolley, Orson Pratt, Jr., and Joseph F. Smith—a better selection than which would not well have been made.
