HANNAH PHILLIPS PRATT (1902-1909)

Hannah Phillips Pratt was the wife of Nephi Pratt, the third President of the Northwestern States Mission. I have been fortunate in obtaining a short sketch of her life from her son, W.P. Pratt, who now resides in Salt Lake City. Sister Pratt was born at Dowlais, Blandgon, South Wales, the British Isles, on April 7, 1847. Her parents kept the conference house at the Church in their native city. She emigrated to Utah at the age of twenty-three in 1870, and the following year on the 20th of February, married Nephi Pratt, President Daniel H. Wells officiating. She was always active in the work of the Church. She and her twin sister, Annie, belonged to a famous Welsh choir and had the distinguished privilege of singing, by request, before Queen Victoria of Great Britain. Sister Pratt possessed a beautiful contralto voice, and appeared at many concerts during her early married life. She was classed as one of Utah’s great singers in those early days, and she devoted her talents principally to the Church, being a member of the Salt Lake Tabernacle Choir. She became the Mother to ten children, seven of whom are alive.

Sister Pratt rendered valuable assistance to her husband in his Missionary work, kept open-house for the Elders and saints, and was always glad to entertain them and provide for their comfort. She Died at portland on April 21st, 1908, and shortly after this time Brother Pratt was released as President of the Mission.
