Pres. John Smith wrote the Valley to his son Geo. A. Smith as follows:

Great Salt Lake City, Oct. 2, 1847.

Dear George:

…According to our former arrangements, we held a conference yesterday.  In the forenoon Brother Parley P. Pratt spoke at length concerning our situation as a people which was very instructive as well as interesting to the saints.  A vote was taken of the congregation to sustain all the principal officers of the church with Brigham Young to preside over the whole.  This vote was taken separately and according to their standing situation.  We then proceeded to organize the council and officers as they were nominated in the epistle.  Union, peace and harmony prevailed throughout the day….

Brother Robert Crow presented a petition signed by himself and seven others, asking permission from the Presidency to dig gold under sanction of the authorities of the church.

Brigham Young remarked that I could not counsel them to go.  Most of those who had been to the gold mines, had made use of the gold to oppress their brethren, and they certainly would do nothing for their benefit, nor anybody’s else, but would spend most of their time in idleness, drunkenness, or riding horses to death, instead of laboring to prepare to raise grain, etc.  If the people knew how to make a good use of gold, he could tell them where was plenty of it.  But they did not know how to use it he recommended Brother Crow to stay in the Valley and raise grain and it would be better for him than to go after gold.

Elder John Taylor made some excellent remarks showing that all nations which had a superabundance of gold, had generally been distracted by intestine broils, robbery and treachery.  He referred to Mexico and Peru, where gold had been abundant and the people were indolent, worthless and treacherous.  He referred to the flourishing condition of Spain prior to its being glutted with gold, and drew a striking contrast between the days of Spain’s glory and those of her ruin which was caused by gold.

Elder Parley P. Pratt and others also made a few remarks on the subject.

Brother Crow plead poverty as his inducement but he expressed himself satisfied with the counsel given.

Sunday, Oct. 6.  Elders Jedediah M. Grant, Ezra T. Benson and Pres. Young preached on the subject of speculation in the Bowery, G.S.L. City in the forenoon.  Pres. Young warned the merchants against taking a course to destroy themselves; told them the sooner they stopped speculating the better for them and this people; those who were not satisfied with a reasonable profit had better pack up their goods and leave this community.  He referred to his pleading with the brethren against going to the gold mines, and that now many of those who went would be glad to get back; and said, if speculation was tolerated in this place, it would be the ruin of this people, and that any man who let the spirit of speculation rule him was on the high road to destruction.  So far as our intercourse with the world was concerned we had proven time and again that when our money was gone it was “damn the Mormons.”  He predicted that “hereafter speculators would use all their means and influence to raise a mob to cut our throats.”  None of the merchants had gone according to his council.

President Heber C. Kimball, Parley P. Pratt, Willard Richards and Willard Snow testified to the truth of the sentiments advanced.

City.  George A. Smith called for one hundred men to accompany him on a mission for twelve months and to be ready in two weeks.  Parley P. Pratt called for wagons, cattle, grain, and provisions for the mission.  Pres. Young remarked: “The field of labor will be Little Salt Lake, and we ant to plant a colony there, and we don’t want men to take families, or little children.  Those who are feeble or who suffer with lung complaints will be healthier there than here.  We want to plant colonies from here to the Pacific Ocean; a few will go into the neighborhood of the Cajon Pass and make a settlement there.”

Seventies Special Conference
Sunday, Jan. 19, 1851

The conference was opened at 10 a.m. with prayer by Elder J.M. Grant, and singing by the choir….

At the same time the Saints in the Bowery were receiving instruction and wisdom from President B. Young, Heber C. Kimball, and P.P. Pratt, on the prospects of commencing a temple in this valley for the endowment of all who were faithful in the work of the ministry, at the same time emphatically declaring that the man who did not settle up his tithing dues, will not have the privilege of receiving his blessings therein.

The Saints were full of joy at the glorious prospect that was laid before them; and the work of reformation among many who have heretofore been lukewarm, has already manifestly commenced….

Affairs at the Capitol
National Hall, Fillmore
Dec. 16, 1855

Judge Smith.
Dear Sir:

Owing to various circumstances, but chiefly attributable to the Council Hill’s not being, as yet, furnished with suitable conveniences for the transaction of business, the legislative machinery is not under full and rapid headway.  The workmen are busily employed, early and late, and it is expected that they will soon have all things in readiness, of a temporary kind, so far as furniture is concerned, so that the duties devolved upon us can be more efficiently attended to.  For these reason, the Assembly adjourned from Thursday last until Monday the 17th; in the meantime, the standing and special committees have occupied the time in preparing matter to present in session, and doubtless on the morrow progress can be reported.

The special committee, to whom was entrusted the framing and presenting such acts as might be deemed necessary for setting in motion our admission into the Union, have prepared “An act providing for holding a convention, with a view to the admission of Utah as a State,” both of which will probably be presented in joint session at an early day.

This forenoon, Elder P.P. Pratt, chaplain of the Council, addressed a crowded audience in the large schoolhouse in this city, and in the afternoon, His Excellency Governor Young and H.C. Kimball, president of the Council, gave interesting and useful instructions to the large congregation.

The weather is clear and very pleasant, as is the civil and religious atmosphere.

Truly, yours,
Albert Carrington
